A Bit Like Waking Up…

June 30th, 2008 · No Comments

Returning from a good vacation is a little like waking up from a good nap.
Just a few shots from my vacation, I’ll be writing here about creativity and crafting and balance again soon. At the moment, though, balance means doing the laundry and falling into bed.

Poetry Friday: “Meditation at Lagunitas”

June 27th, 2008 · No Comments

“Meditation at Lagunitas”
Robert Hass
All the new thinking is about loss.
In this it resembles all the old thinking.
The idea, for example, that each particular erases
the luminous clarity of a general idea. That the clown-
faced woodpecker probing the dead sculpted trunk
of that black birch is, by his presence,
some tragic falling off from a first world
of undivided light. [...]

I’m on vacation– a friend’s wedding, a week at Martha’s Vineyard with a huge group of dear old friends– and will be away from this space for a week or so.
Cheers!

Poetry Friday: “Layover”

June 20th, 2008 · No Comments

“Layover”
by Robert Hass
Thin snow falling on the runway at Anchorage,
bundled bodies of men, grey padded jackets, outsized gloves,
heads bent against the wind. They lunge, weaving
among the scattering of luggage carts, hard at what must be
half the world’s work, loading and unloading.
Mounded snow faintly grey and sculpted into what seems
the entire vocabulary of resignation. [...]

I Have a Problem With Books

June 19th, 2008 · No Comments

Quite frankly, I have too many of them. We are leaving for vacation on Friday, there is no reason for me to have 12 books from the library. This tally does not include the 3 magazines I have to read and the “fun” books I’d hoped to read on vacation.

Finding Coherence

June 18th, 2008 · No Comments

Starting this blog has got me thinking about how disparate parts of my life seem to be– even to me! I have a hard time reconciling my life as an academic in a MA program with my life as a homebody who prefers to be left alone to embroider and read. This rupture [...]

I Can Make Yogurt

June 17th, 2008 · No Comments

Making my own yogurt isn’t as hard as I thought. I should say, we don’t actually eat breakfasts like this every day… or even usually. The kiwi were on a ridiculous sale and the croissants are the Trader Joe’s frozen ones, which are actually really good for frozen baked goods. The yogurt [...]

Stitching At Last

June 16th, 2008 · 1 Comment

I took this photo outside our apt building this AM and now all my neighbors must think I’m crazy– tying an apron to a fence at 8 AM…
I’ve been looking for a stitching art to do for a while now. My mother is an amazing quilter and, when she was much younger, did [...]

Let’s Get Going

June 15th, 2008 · 2 Comments

This feels a little like stepping up to a microphone in the spotlight– I can’t quite see you but I sense that there must be somebody out there. Maybe even a lot of somebodies.
In my day job I do a lot of writing, I am a grad student after all, but I don’t get [...]
