Yesterday I had one of those moments when I really, really didn’t like what I’d become. I was one of those people, the people who get taunted on StuffWhitePeopleLike. Yes, I was at Whole Foods trying to buy an eco-friendly deodorant that was in a no or low plastic container and, AND I was using my blackberry to research various companies… You know that high I was on last week when I used my own bulk bin bags? Well, it is low now that I’ve stood in a Whole Foods for 20 min weighing the relative merits of herbal non-plastic deodorants…
I know that I probably should make my own deodorant, it seems super simple. And I will, just not right now… Right now, for me, I still need some kind of magical potion from a bottle to convince me I wont stink. Because really, I can get pretty stinky.
So I decided to go with the Burt’s Bees Herbal Deodorant. I’d've picked this one right away except that Burt’s Bees got bought out by Clorox a while back and there is something that doesn’t seem okay about a huge chemical company that makes some pretty nasty stuff.
Of course, after spending some time trying to weigh cost and good reviews against a questionable (at best) parent company I realized what I was doing and thought “oh my G-d, what have I become?” grabbed the bottle of Burt’s Bees, vowed to make my own next time, and moved on to buying some granola in the bulk area.
Also, a few weeks ago nico! posted a comment asking what I’m doing about natural dental care. My honest answer is… not much. Jon and I recently made the switch from toothpaste packed in plastic tubes to Tom’s of Maine’s toothpaste which comes in a metal tube (although it is lined with plastic and I’m not sure if this means I’m doing any good). I also got a toothbrush from Preserve, a company that uses 100% recycled plastics and takes the used brushes back to turn into “plastic lumber” for picnic tables. Again, this isn’t really the ideal solution but it must at least extend the plastic’s life cycle? Maybe?
The personal care side of my anti-plastic crusade is going a little slower than the food side. In part this is because I (like to think I’m) pretty low maintenance and don’t use a whole lot of stuff. The stuff I do use tends to last a long time so the pressure has been kind of off. I probably wont go to a DIY toothpaste but deodorant, soap, and lotion are probably in my future.

I feel your pain. Everytime I shop at “Whole Paycheck” I feel angry, confused and full of liberal guilt – not to mention broke. Good luck with your anti-plastic crusade and good luck in SD.
