A Fairly Good Time in SD

August 11th, 2008 · 1 Comment

Sorry about the puns, I can’t help myself.  Anyway, hard to believe my time in SD is almost done!  I pack up and head out first thing this coming Sat… Seems so odd how quickly the time here went by, not to mention how much I learned and produced (I know you all haven’t seen it all that much yet, but you will… patience!)

This weekend I worked at the Voices for Choice booth at Sioux Empire Fair here in Sioux Falls.  This was the first time I moved outside the Democratic and/or Pro-Choice bubble (I don’t think those two are equivalent, by the way).  The experience was… interesting.

In general, I still think South Dakotans get a bad wrap– 99% of the people I talked to were, if not supportive, not rude and certainly not agressive.  I did hear a few anti-ACLU remarks and a couple of people asking me about kiling babies, but I feel like it comes with the job.

Instead of getting annoyed or frustrated though (well, okay, I did feel those things for a few minutes), I took my over all positive experience at the fair as a sign that I’m in the right place and doing the right thing.  So much of the past year or two of my life has been spent grappling with the “what the eff am I doing with my life?” questions that it is nice to be actually doing something I believe in– even if what I believe in is leaving people alone to make their own decisions about their own lives.

Also, got worried this weekend that I might be a Libertarian… then realized that, actually, I think the UN is a good idea so probably am not Libertarian.  More like I’m a leave-me-and-everybody-else-alone lefty.  That seems much more accurate.

you can totally be a libertarian and think the un is a good idea, you just can’t be a crazy libertarian.
