Embracing the D dot C

August 25th, 2008 · No Comments

I spent much of last week and this weekend rediscovering my favorite things about D.C.– friends, good food from all around the world, and interesting old buildings.  Sure, SD had great vintage signs but I love DC from street level (and away from the “monumental core”).  Jon and I stumbled onto this library on H St NE on our way home from the Thai Festival yesterday.  Those round windows full of books make me smile, I find them so very inviting.

We met some dear friends from Georgetown for a picnic and pre-law school send off– very low key and very much what I needed after a week of too much booze, too many late nights, and generally being a little irresponsible.  Fruit salad, buffalo sausage, cheese, chocolate and a baguette from the Algerian bakers at our local(ish) farmer’s market, perfect.

On Sunday we spent a few hours at the 2008 Thai Festival, sponsored by the Thai embassy here in D.C.  We have got to get better about hitting up these embassy-funded events.  Here there was more good food, a demonstration of Thai Kickboxing, some traditional dancing and art.  The exhibit itself was a little weird– super focused on commerce and Thai-US relations (a lot of “we’re friends, we are!  really!” it felt like), but in general a nice free way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

I’m back now, I really needed last week to nap, catch up on my DC friends, and generally reconnect to what my life here is like.  Now, however, it is time to get serious about this whole work-creativity balance, with classes starting Wed. I need to plan how I’m going to keep creativity in my life.
