After my morning volunteer shift Jon and I headed over to the Smithsonian’s exhibition “Jim Henson’s Fantastic World.” Jim Henson and all his characters were such a central part of my childhood from Sesame Street to Fraggle Rock and The Muppet Show. To this day my favorite Christmas movie of all time is The Muppet Christmas Carol. I would strongly recomend a trip over to the Muppets’ official web page. Hilarious!
Beyond just a trip down memory-lane, the exhibit emphasized Henson’s approach to creativity and his incredible ability to create whole worlds. His art is incredibly beautiful in a simple sort of way. It makes me feel like I might be able to count myself as fairly creative even if what I’m producing isn’t wonderful in a techical sense. Don’t get me wrong, he had loads more talent in one finger than I ever will but the style wasn’t unapproachable and that is what I find so attractive– I also think it is why the Muppets are still so popular.
Oh, also, while looking for the above image I discovered the National Museum of Play. I had no idea we even had a museum of play! This place sounds awesome. I really, really like people who take play seriously.
There is lots more to say in this entry (cooking! furniture moving!) but, sadly, I’m in a fight wth my Internet connection… more on the weekend’s creativity later…

The ladies and I are going next week. I suggest a Muppet Show marathon beforehand. Possibly with beer.
