PPSD put up another one of my videos today.  It was really important to me to include the voices of men in these videos– I find that all too often pro-choice is seen as women-only.  I don’t think that this is true but I do recognize that the movement needs to get a little better acknowedging the concerns that men have about reproduction.

Before I headed out to SD Jon and I had a really long conversation about what men need to hear to be convinced that the pro-choice group isn’t taking rights away from men.  I understand that this is perhaps not the most popular position in the feminsty/lefty community but I think that men do have some claim over what happens to their offspring.  What Jon is reacting to, I think, is a culture that has given women sole control over contraception and the decision to terminate a pregnancy.  On one hand this is a good thing, not every man is as wonderful as Jon (or my dad) but on another hand it has put women in a very unfair position and has made at least some men a little wary of the whole pro-choice thing.

I’m not quite sure how to remedy this.  There are a lot of jerks in the world who wont want anything to do with a kid or a decision and women should certainly not find themselves beholden to a man who doesn’t have her and their family’s interests at heart.  However, if the issue continues to be only about young women I think it will have a hard time gaining lasting traction (says the non-expert).
