Holiday Shimmer

December 8th, 2008 · No Comments

This weekend was just what I needed– a lot of time with friends, good food, and long afternoon naps.  Jon and I put up our Christmas decorations.  We don’t have lots, and no tree this year, but I will take almost any excuse to hang sparkly, bright, shiny things up in our apartment.  I hate that you can see the tape in these photos, but in person actually it isn’t so bad.  Generally, I’m too busy looking at the pretty sparkly snowflakes to notice the tape… scotch tape is not holiday spirit.

Even though I’ve been on this anti-plastic kick, somehow my anti-plastic thing kind of breaks down around the holidays.  I don’t know why, but my nostalgia for garland (plastic) and glittered snowflakes (also plastic) over powers my feelings about the trash island.

We also have a wreath on our front door.  Interestingly, did you know that for a while in the third century wreaths were considered idolatrous?

Also, I love garland at night but during the day it looks a little tacky.  In a way though, I think that is really what Christmas decorations are all about– once it gets dark they sparkle and you don’t notice the tape and suddenly it is Christmas and peaceful.
