It was the best of times, it was the Medieval Times

December 15th, 2008 · No Comments

I must say, after spending several weekends with the Civil War reenactors something like Medieval Times just doesn’t quite do it for me any more…  This isn’t to say we didn’t have loads of fun, but I think I might be turning into one of those people who cant go to things like this and not say “why aren’t they using ‘real’ fabric?” or “that isn’t how the saddles would’ve looked.”

The kid in the background of that photo above was having the time of his life!  He kept jumping up and down and his dad would look at him, smile, and then give him the “buddy, you’ve gotta sit down” talk.  It was adorable, and made me glad that he wasn’t wondering if they were using authentic tools (which, of course, they aren’t– it is theater not reenacting).

In a way, the night was really helpful for my thesis (and means I can justify trying to write it off!) because it made me realize that what reenactors do is really different from theatre– it might be a performance, but the guns are real and so are the sparks.  The knights on Sat. evening must’ve had flint on them to get sparks like that.

This doesn’t mean that I didn’t have a blast– I seriously did, I love that kind of stuff– but I also learned something along the way.

Almost done with finals, there is a sewing project I’m planning to start right after that.  Seriously.
