Secretly I am pretty excited about the upcoming movie Coraline.  It is from the same people who worked on The Nightmare Before Christmas, another fantastic animated movie, and is based on Neil Gaiman’s graphic novel.  Plus, they’re doing some really good promotion work.  Other than the fantasy flowers on the web, they’ve done those weird subway animation things…  I don’t know yet how I feel about those.  I always find it creepy when I look out the train window and see the Nestle Quik bunny hopping out of a rabbit hole with chocolate milk.  The Coraline ones are also a little dark, so they feel a little like the subway is itself a window into some other place.

When I was younger I hated the creepy children’s book thing.  Apparently I was kind of a weeny as a 5 year old.  Now that I’m a grown up (er, at least older), and realize that the creepy children’s book is really about teaching adults a lesson, I’ve become much more forgiving of the dark and bizarre.  Well, I am still kind of a weeny about the dark and weird but on screen it doesn’t bother me… when I see creepy old dolls at antique stores I still turn around and tiptoe away.
