The Great Chocolate Chip Cookie Bake-Off

March 3rd, 2009 · 1 Comment

And now for something a little less militaristic…  On Sunday some friends got together for the 2009 Great Chocolate Chip Cookie Bake-Off.  Jon and our friend Steph both think they have the best cookies, so we put them to the test.  We also used the Safeway tube cookie dough and the recipe from the back of the Toll House bag as control measures– just to set standards.

Jon’s dough (not pictured) was hands down the favorite to eat raw.

When it came to the actual, baked cookies though… I’m kinda surprised to say that Stephs were really, really good.  She uses the NYT’s recipe that made the rounds on the blogosphere a few months back.  The sea salt really does do the trick, it was her secret ingredient for sure.  I love Jon’s cookies, don’t get me wrong, they are my comfort food of choice when my thesis starts to stress me out.  He uses a variation on Alton Brown’s recipe. It has a little less vanilla than the NYT’s version of the classic cookie.

Both were really good… I hope I can con Jon and his crew into doing more cook-offs.  Although, we were kinda sick by the end of it.  Hmmm… maybe something like dips would be easier on our tummies?

UPDATE: Jon’s cookies are way better on day two.  Stephs were too salty and a little… the texture just wasn’t right.  Therefore, Jon’s cookies and Steph’s cookies really did tie.

Wow, I always used just the tollhouse recipe. Really though, you need to tell us how Jon changes the Alton Brown recipe.
In other taste off ideas, once it becomes spring enough to go to the farmers market I was thinking of doing an egg-off. Trying the $7 (or is it 5) pasture raised eggs, regular organic and the cheapo eggs in 3 different formats (maybe poached fired and souffle). If your down we could make it a trans national project.
