Royal Mail vintage posters

September 15th, 2009 · No Comments

I really like the mail, it is almost like magic to me.  You drop a piece of paper in a blue box on the street corner and then a few days later that same piece of paper ends up across the country.  Other people don’t find this magical, but to me it feels like it since I cant make it from DC to Seattle in 3 days for just 44 cents something special must be going on.

Anyway, I’ve been really indulging the part of me that is obsessed not just with stamps but with the entire project of postal service– letters, post offices, package wrappers, mail carrier bags, the whole thing.  I’ve come a cross a number of awesome mail blogs and websites (see my updated blogroll).  Now, I’ve known about the Letter Writers’ Alliance for some time, but did you know that the Office of the Inspector General for the USPS blogs?  S/he does!

Plus, there is the British Postal Museum & Archive which looks just as amazing as the US Postal Museum (my favorite Smithsonian, FYI) and the French Postal Museum in Paris (which I went to and loved).  The BPMA is currently in the process of scanning and uploading Royal Mail posters for lots of services– some of them are online and a few are even available for purchase!  This archive is a treasure trove for somebody like me– I love the mail, mid-20th century graphic design, and obsessive cataloging.

Also, this reminds me I should dig out my copies of the The Griffin & Sabine Trilogy Have you read these?  Oh you should, they’re wonderful.
