October is Drawing Month! (If you live in the UK)

Part of the reason Ariel and I wanted to start 64 Shades of Wax in October is because this month is “the big draw”– a program run by the international Campaign for Drawing.  I’ve had their link over in my sidebar for a while now because their mission statement is just wonderful:

The Campaign has created a new regard for the value of drawing to help people see, think, invent and take action. Its long-term ambition is to change the way drawing is perceived by educationalists and the public…  It sees drawing as a basic human skill useful in all walks of life. The Campaign’s work will finish when the words ‘I can’t draw’ are dropped from our vocabulary.

I am certainly guilty of muttering about how I can’t draw.  In fact, I take a certain pride in recounting how trying to learn perspective once brought me to tears in front of two art professors– one of whom, not known for his pitty, actually stopped what he was doing in the art building at 10 o’cloc to help me with my drawing.  Tear stains were not uncommon on my drawings, sadly.  I just wanted to do art history– I wanted to think about art not make it!  I’ve got loads of respect for artists– it’s just not my thing is all.

It looks like most of all the “big draw” events happen in the UK, where the group is based, but I’m sure folks on this side of the Pond can give them a run for their money.  Wouldn’t it be great to get something like this going in the US?

Oh, and don’t forget there is another color up at 64 Shades of Wax!  Already starting to think about next week’s color– red.  I want to do something bold!
