Annapolis: A Damp, Delightful Spot

December 14th, 2009 · 2 Comments

Spent 24 hours in Annapolis, MD this weekend–a town that avoided damage during the Revolution and Civil Wars and, as a result, is full of old buildings, graveyards, and historic markers.  We loved just about every cold, rainy, soggy, damp minute of it.  In theory we went up for Jon’s company’s holiday party… but mostly wandered around 17th and 18th century streets, toured old homes, poked around in antique shops, and sipped coffee in beautiful, peaceful spots.  Oh, and I very nearly came home with an adorable 1920s-inspired hat (only to be informed that it was too small for me).

Jon bought a pipe from The Smoke Shop and we spent over an hour talking to the proprietors– several kind men.  I had no idea how much went into making a proper pipe.  I hope this means Jon’s inner 80-year old will come out and keep my inner 85-year old company!  Plus, I could get used to this kind of graphic design.  What is it about tobacco that brings out the perfect design?  I couldn’t get a good shot of the shop, which has been there for over 60 years and is full of wonderful old things, but I did get a few details (like that antique fire extinguisher above).

Click through for a few more snaps from the weekend…

I really liked this post box.  I haven’t seen one like it before– though it’s clearly only for letters.

The Senate’s current chambers in the MD State House.

Tomb of John Paul Jones, founder of the US Navy (also, this photo really doesn’t do justice to this sarcophagus).

But before all this, breakfast at 49 West– so peaceful and warm.  We left really blissed out.

I think that 85 year old is more outer than inner. It sounds like a lovely trip. But lovely is the key word, you do sound a bit like an 85 year old.

I hope you had a great time in the city that I call home! I love it here — and that shot that you have is my favorite spot in Annapolis. Every time I am close to that street I head up it to get that awesome view of the State House.

    Please visit us again soon!

(I came across your blog because I have a Google Alerts for “Annapolis”) :)
